To implement our Carbon Monoxide Safety program, we collaborate with NMSU’s Southern Area Health Education Center (SoAHEC), who has an Environmental Health/Home Safety Program. SoAHEC promotoras (volunteer lay health workers) – trained to address local health needs and conduct community education – provide healthy/safe home education and distribute carbon monoxide (CO) alarms and educational materials in English and Spanish. Our program is focused in southern New Mexico in colonia households (colonia are low income, unincorporated subdivisions in New Mexico along the U.S.-Mexico border). Since 2004, 160 CO alarms have been distributed with the Help Yourself to a Healthy Home booklet (mostly in Spanish).
