Federal Agencies Working To Make Homes Healthier
The Healthy Homes Partnership is excited to share with you news regarding the newly published report, Advancing Healthy Housing: A Strategy for Action. The Strategy for Action unifies federal action to advance healthy housing, demonstrating the connection between housing condition and residents’ health, and promotes strategies and methods intended to control and prevent major housing-related exposures and hazards in a cost-effective manner.

Health is not just about the quality of your health care, it’s also about where you live and the home you live in. It is estimated that over 30 million U.S. housing units have significant physical problems and/or elevated levels of lead, radon, or other contaminants placing occupants at risk for potential illnesses and injuries.

The Strategy for Action will guide federal action, which will in turn influence, the activities of state and local governments, and private and non-government organizations’ toward contributing to the substantial reduction in the number of American homes with health and safety hazards.

On Monday, February 4, 2013, leaders of five U.S. federal agencies joined together in a press event to announce the launch this bold new vision. Visit the interagency website, www.HUD.gov/healthyhomes to watch a webcast of the event, learn more about the Strategy, and see a video from the soon-to-be-released Healthy Homes consumer website.

October is Children's Environmental Health Month

http://yosemite.epa.gov/ochp/ochpweb.nsf/content/chm-home.htm

EPA’s mission to protect human health and the environment requires us to continue to pay special attention to the vulnerabilities of children, and especially to children living in disadvantaged communities. Children are more affected by pollution than adults for many reasons. They are smaller, their organ systems are still developing, their play and learning behaviors expose them to additional environmental threats.

In October and throughout the year, EPA will work with parents, teachers, and health providers to promote healthy environments where children live, learn and play.

Take the 40 Gallon Challenge to Conserve Water

The 40 Gallon Challenge is a call for residents and businesses to reduce our region's water use on average by 40 gallons per person, per day. The challenge began in 2011 as a voluntary campaign to increase water conservation.
Several things you can do around your home:
Fix leaky pipes.
Turn off fawcet when brushing teeth.
Use food wastes for compost instead of using the garbage disposal.
Use water appliances that have the WaterSense label (dishwasher, clothes washer, showerheads, toilets).
Water outside plants early in the morning.
